Tree Care Facts
What Should DFW Homeowners Know Before Hiring a Tree Service?
APPEX Tree Service is a fully insured tree care company serving 12 North Texas communities, from Fort Worth and Arlington to Burleson, Weatherford and Mineral Wells. We work Monday through Saturday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and follow ISA guidelines and ANSI A300 standards. These six facts, drawn from International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) research and guidance, explain what good tree work looks like.
How much of a tree can be pruned at one time?
According to the ISA, generally no more than 25% of a tree's crown should be removed at once, and less for mature trees. Leaves make the sugar a tree lives on, so heavy pruning is a significant health stress. Our trimming crews plan every cut around that limit.

Why is tree topping harmful?
ISA research shows topping can remove 50–100% of a tree's leaf-bearing crown. The tree answers with fast, weakly attached shoots that can grow as much as 20 feet in one year in some species. Those shoots break easily in wind and ice, so topping raises risk instead of lowering it. APPEX never tops trees.

Do healthy trees add value to a property?
Yes. The ISA states that healthy, well-maintained trees can add 10–20% to the value of a property, while disfigured, topped trees are considered an impending expense. Regular, correct pruning protects that value.

How can you check that a tree company is qualified?
The ISA recommends checking for an ISA credential, asking for proof of insurance and calling the insurer, getting more than one estimate, and being wary of door-to-door bargains. ISA's free Verify a Credential tool confirms certifications. APPEX carries General Liability and Workers' Compensation coverage.

What should you do after a storm damages a tree?
The ISA lists 4 steps: take safety precautions, assess the damage, resist the urge to do it yourself, and hire an arborist. Limbs under tension can react unexpectedly when cut, and trees touching power lines can cause electrocution. Stay clear and call your utility, then call us.

How deep should a stump be ground?
APPEX grinds stumps 8–12 inches below grade as standard. Many operators stop at about 4 inches, which lets the stump sprout back. Grinding to 8–12 inches removes regrowth and leaves the area ready for backfill and sod.
