Before You Call

What Should You Do When a Tree Is Damaged?

Stay clear of the tree, check for power lines, take photos, then call or text APPEX at (682) 359-3108. We answer Monday through Saturday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. These steps follow International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) storm guidance and keep you safe while you wait for a crew.

  • Is a tree touching a power line safe to approach?

No. According to ISA guidance, you should never remove branches from or near power lines and never to go near downed lines, because they may still be live. If tree parts are touching utility lines, call your electricity provider first.

  • Can a damaged tree still move after the storm passes?

Yes. According to the ISA, broken limbs hanging overhead, or uprooted trees resting on roofs or other trees, may keep moving after a storm. Limbs under tension can react unexpectedly when cut. Keep people and pets out of the area until a crew arrives.

  • What should you record for an insurance claim?

Photograph the damage before cleanup starts. According to the ISA, check your homeowner's policy first and having an appraisal done as soon as possible. Appraisals can include the cost of debris removal and repairs, and in most cases the claim limit for one tree is US$500.

  • Where can you track severe weather in DFW?

The National Weather Service Fort Worth/Dallas office, at 3401 Northern Cross Blvd in Fort Worth, issues local forecasts and warnings. NOAA's Storm Prediction Center publishes severe-weather outlooks days ahead. Checking both helps you schedule pruning before storm season.
