Why Your Trees Need a Local North Texas Expert

Hiring a tree service from outside the area means they won't understand the specific challenges your trees face. APPEX is built on deep North Texas expertise:

  • The Soil

North Texas is dominated by heavy, expansive clay soils that shift with moisture changes, stressing tree roots and causing structural instability. We know how to assess root health in these conditions.

  • The Weather

From spring supercells and tornado threats to sudden winter ice storms and summer drought, DFW weather is extreme. We prune and brace trees specifically to withstand these conditions.

  • The Species

We specialize in native and common North Texas trees: Live Oak, Post Oak, Pecan, Cedar Elm, Chinese Pistache, and the notorious Bradford Pear (which is prone to catastrophic splitting).

Local Conditions

How Do North Texas Soils and Weather Affect Your Trees?

APPEX serves 12 communities across Tarrant, Johnson, Parker and Palo Pinto counties. That area spans two of the 10 Texas ecoregions defined by Texas Parks and Wildlife: the Cross Timbers and the Blackland Prairies. Soil, rainfall and storm patterns differ across that range, and each one changes how trees should be pruned, removed and protected.

  • What soils are found in the Cross Timbers?

According to Texas Parks and Wildlife, Cross Timbers soils are primarily sandy to loamy, with moderate but somewhat erratic rainfall. Weatherford and Mineral Wells sit in this region. Sandy soils drain fast, so trees there need deep, infrequent watering during dry spells.

  • What makes Blackland Prairie soil different?

According to Texas Parks and Wildlife, Blackland Prairie soils are uniformly dark alkaline clays, often called "black gumbo," with 28 to 40 inches of average annual rainfall. Heavy clay holds water and shifts as it wets and dries. That stresses roots and can loosen trees after long rains.

  • Why do storms uproot trees after heavy rain?

According to the ISA, strong winds can break branches and even uproot trees, especially when heavy rain has softened the soil. Spring supercells and occasional ice storms hit the DFW area. That makes pre-season inspection of large trees near homes worthwhile.

  • Which local tree problems should North Texas owners watch for?

Two stand out. Oak wilt can enter Live Oaks through fresh wounds, so ISA guidance says susceptible trees should not be pruned during active transmission periods. Callery (Bradford) pear, according to TexasInvasives.org, forms dense thickets that push out native plants and is found throughout Texas.
